originally designed by Roy Lippincott (1885-1969), Architect for the Smith & Caughey Building and Auckland University Clock Tower. This house he designed in the 1930’s for himself in an Arts and Crafts style and, like many old houses had undergone several extensions over the years. For the main house, our input was to provide an invisible touch; to sensitively correct the stormwater strategies of a couple of these extensions. After consideration and discussion, we undertook this by adjusting the pitches of some of the existing roof planes and then adjusting the configuration of the ‘downflow’ gutters and downpipes to provide a fundamentally sound runoff solution. Not perhaps a bold design opportunity, but equally as satisfying for F+D=A to be involved in the preservation of an historically significant architectural building.
