Having its heyday in the 1980’s, buffet restaurants generally in New Zealand had suffered over the intervening years, with many of Valentines competitors now gone. In justification of it’s strong brand, , Valentines, while a survivor, was still clearly in need of a comprehensive makeover in terms of what buffet style had to offer in our contemporary dining environment, to understand how to position the Valentines brand for the future.
The architecture formed an important component of this exercise, along with offer, service that all had to work together to reimage the brand. The brief was to create a contemporary, fun atmosphere that would reflect DIVERSITY, that was on of the key words that developed out of the marketing investigation, yet at a budget that would be realistic for implementation by the brands franchisees.
In response Architecture F+D=A developed a ‘shopping basket’ of elements that could be tailored on an individual basis to suit the needs of the specific restaurant sites. Areas highlighted for change included those items that would provide most obvious change, and techniques employed that would allow a facelift without expensive structural change.
