Addison Neighbourhood Centre

Architecture F+D=A was commissioned to undertake a Masterplanning exercise for a proposed new town centre to be created as a community focus for the quickly developing surrounding residential population, of Addison Development that when mature will provide an additional 10,000+ population to this area of Takanini.

To support the ongoing community objectives, it was imperative that a retailing model was developed that would also ensure the long-term economic prosperity of its occupants.

The brief for this project was the creation of a 10,000 sqm. retail centre to consist of a 3,500 sqm supermarket, a 1,300 sqm library,  a 300 sqm community centre, with the remainder consisting of a mixture of specialty and convenience retail entities.

Several options were tabled and then critiqued in steering group meetings, from which one masterplan that proved most effective was developed into the final masterplan.

In a centre of this size and type the Supermarket, and the supermarket carpark is identified as the primary anchor, and the library and community entities as a secondary, civic anchor. A dual frontage model was used as a basis to configure the retail because this is both the strongest retail proposition and to provide a ‘High Street’ appeal, with one side being discontinuous to allow access from the consolidated carpark of the supermarket behind.
